Read this first: Click on the link to the Yorkshire Water Storm Overflow Map and zoom-in to your desired location or type the name of the town or village in the search box. This takes a couple of clicks because there is a drop-down box for fine-tuning your selection i.e. Malton has lots of CSOs so you need to select the one you want to look at.

You should be able to find the latest spill data, and spill duration for any given CSO. Unfortunately, the technology has its limitations and it is not possible to see historical data* and it does not tell you ‘How much’ is being spilled. The volume of sewage being spilled into the watercourse, river or ditch or sea is not available. There is currently no immediate way of knowing if the volume of sewage spilled into the River Derwent would fill Castle Howard lake, or a bucket. As the figures show, the volume of sewage is likely to be ‘a lot’. How long is a piece of string?
You can also find annual spill data on the Rivers Trust Sewage Map:

*If you want to see historical spill data or other information relating to combined sewer overflows (CSOs) in Yorkshire, you should request this via an Environmental Information Request (EIR) to Yorkshire Water. The email is eir@yorkshirewater.co.uk
